More Designzz.
I've just been designing an sampling ideas really, some of the stuff I've been looking at it's a prisoner's mental state an how it drive them mad an also looking the idea of humiliation as a prison uniform with the stripes was used to humiliate a prisoner, it was as if they where wearing a badge of shame.

Designing!!
I've also started designing taking inspiration from prison culture an the effect it had, one of my ideas is using recycled denim, the idea behind is that the idea of prisoners re offending and coming in an out of prison, it's almost like recycling doing it over an over again and wondering if they are every going to make a change in there life. Also I was inspired by a film called 'the boy in striped pyjamies' this one scene in the film at the end where all the uniform is hanging from the cloakroom and its all dirty and worn out.
I started trying out diiferent ways I could piece up the denim together and, at first I started doing it with stripes, I asked everyone there opinion an they didn't thinkin it was effective enough so I decided to do it on smaller parts taking key elements like the pockets and stitching out.

tattoos
Samplin...
I've also started sampling, for my print I want to use gang tattoos and prisons, as I think tattoos play an important role in gangs. Because there tattoos have meanings and stories behind them. Each tattoos means something, I like the idea of incorporating a tattoo with a story behind it. I looked the gang MS 13, as I think there tattoos are interesting, also more tattoos you have the more devotion you have to your gang. It's almost as if they cover themselves completely. I've done a few samples of print on denim, I think it's ok I like the idea of it been subtle, but I asked other people opinions they said I should think outside the box and try something different then stencil.

The numbers gang..John Mongrol this man is truley scary!!!
I watched an episode of Ross Kemp on Gangs and this time he was in south africa, and interviewing the notorious Numbers gangs called the 'the 26s, 27s and 28s.
The leader of the 28s gang is a man called John Mongrol this man is responsible for over 2000 deaths inside the prison and rapes a different inmate every 3 weeks even though he claims he's not gay! He then talks about how he tattoos with a razor blade ouchhhhh!

Behind barz
I started looking to look more into prison culture, when I ask my pen pals about it its like entering a completely different world. It surprises me that they have survived this long with the prison politics. It just that I got an e-mail from Robert today, he said he he's got is e-mail mins cut off an i won't get an e-mail from him till July. But he says we can still keep contact using the 'snail mail' as he puts it lool, I think he's been in trouble again it's not the first or the last either.
He started to tell about the different gangs within the prison system, the main ones are:
Black Guerilla Family
La Nuestra Familia
La Eme
Aryan Brotherhood
He says that the gangs are divided up by race, an they don't mix. They are hostile towards each other, an for they survival they must demonstrate loyalties to racial gangs. Even though my pen pal Robert is white hes a member of a black gang, he's the only white who functions with the blacks. An because of that he's hated by alot of the whites. The main races within prison systems in America is Hispanic, black and white.
I found this clip talking about racial tensions within prisons.

Women in Prisons
I started to look at women in prison, an how prisons affect them, the fact they are imprisoned miles away from they families, they lose their homes and there relationships with there children. I've also looking at sterotypes, how must people sterotyple women in prison as been 'butch' looking. I found an article about at one female prison. At Fluvanna Correctional Centre for Woman in Virgina segregated 'butch' looking lesbian inmates in a separate wing. The inmates had short hair and wore loose fitting clothes.
I think with women in prison, they are more open about there feelings and will talk about it. Also a lot of women in prison do have problems with men and feel more comfortable with been with a women.

Speaking of young people...
On my last post I mentioned talking about people in prison, and how people tend to start crime at a young age, which them onto a downward path spiral. I did futher research into it, I also came across an arguement, which questioned if a child was born evil?
I don't think a child is ever born evil, children that commit crimes come from a simular background. Their parents where poorly educated, unemployed or suffer from mental health problems or drug users. Also the family structure over the years has broken down, and most of there parents are either single or divorced. An also a lack of good role models, espically young men, has they have no father around, they usually turn to another male role model, or alot of young men look up to hip hop stars, who rap about sex, drugs , and voilence. Alot these young criminals grow up without boundries and no structure, I also looked at gangs a lot of young people turn to gangs an in a way see it as a family and also a sense identity and pressure to fit in.
I also came across a TV programme 'Ross Kemp on Gangs', I thought it was interesting to watch. It baffles in a sense because I think to myself the lifestyle they lead is dangerous and they could die any time soon. So why would they want to join a gang knowing that its dangerous.

Back again y'all
Hey hey hey
As you know I'm doing my FMP on prisons , I have been further extending my research on them, I have been interviewing people who work in prison. I have asked two people, one has worked in a young offenders for young men, and one has worked in prison in Jamaica.
I think they was a quite a difference between him. It definitely made me see prisons from a different point of view and the prisoners inside it. Reading both their statements it made me feel kinda sorry for some of these prisoners, their are so many factors that lead them onto that downward spiral in life.

Possibly the scariest men...I've ever seen on televison..
Whilst my research Ive taken to watching many prison documentries, I mean there is LOADS! The National Geographic Channel, Youtube and Channel 4 have many of them. Anyways I was watching a documentry on youtube called 'Lock-up Raw :Corcoran Extended stay' Anyways there was this rather scary bloke called Christian, Christian well 'was' a high ranking La eme member. If your wondering 'La eme' is a basically the mexican mafia. The mexican mafia is NO joke! Anyways he was interviewed about his 'crimes' He described how 'cut' up his cell mate. While casually sitting there and smiling away as if it was nothing. That's not the first person hes killed he currently serving life without parole. Anyways the next man I came across was called 'Mr X' , a former gang member serving life he can't be named for legal reasons.
'I like to stab people, it's a hobby'
Yup one of Mr X's infamous quotes.
God..im lazy!!
Mmm today I had a one on one with emily, I've relised im offfically lazy! I gotta alot of catching up to do an I've set myself some targets.
1. Primary drawings (a must)!
2. Channel 4 documentries on prison ( gotta wacth)!
3. TO DO WORK IN MA SKETCHBOOK ( A MUST) !
I've also decided to change my colour scheme as I feel using a bright colour scheme and having using tattoos, i feel it will look like something ed hardy has produced. The last thing I want is my collection to look like a 'Ed hardy rip off' ! So I've decided to look at something quite minamal, and here it is!

It's a start...
Well I just been collecting research on prisons, i've gained some primary that my wonderful friends have sent me through the mail, as we are millions of miles away! I asked them how they each described prison life they said
( A few quotes I've pulled out from there letters they have sent me)
'Lots of peeps getting killed and and gang wars. So now thats all screwed up! ne-wayz, let me tell you some and please dnt judge me of my actions, jus so you kno to better understand me when i got lock-up it went lock down fro sending this fu to the hospital, I got pick a free-world charge'
Frankie
'Prison, at least the one one I'm in, is a rough place. In the movies, there are always the extra dramatics, but in real prison, there is a certain degree of respect that is granted to one another. There is a code of ethics amongt convicts that is inviolable. The penalty for violating this code can be death.'
Robert
Some rather interstin books I've encountered...
Oh no It's FMP timez...
Ok so ive decided for my for my fmp, im going to look at PRISONS! Yup prisons, well prison culture really. Anyways for my starting point, I've made some new friends!
Meet Robert, Shawn and Frankie! They are currently all incarnated in the american prison system and to get the whole idea of prison I decided to write to them to see what prison culture is really all about. The reason why I decided to pick american prisons is because they have the highest rate of people incarnated than any other country also, their sentences are harsh and system is institutionally corrupted!
